Holigent Transition
About Holigent Transition
The term Holigent Transition refers to a process of redesigning the way we live, work, commute, consume, and govern ourselves in transitioning to a socioeconomic arrangement that is secure, peaceful and sustainable on our endangered planet. The transition is gradual and voluntary and to be developed a community at a time. It is aimed to introduce a hybrid economic system in which a human resource barter-based wealth generation and value exchange system works parallel with the capitalist general/global economy.
Such a hybrid economy will utilize the extraordinary energy and success potential inherent in the capitalist system while at the same time generate and retain local wealth for securing a quality of life for the participating community. This transitioning process will likely span across the next generation and beyond. The proposed transition is engineered through two major steps.
The Transitional Urban Village developments, by a nonprofit corporations, is designed to provide the physical framework and infrastructure to facilitate the transition from suburban sprawl to vertical expansion, and from car-dependent to car-free and sustainable living as well as provide affordable living by rent-reduction through community credit (C-credit) earned in community service.
The Holigent Solution will be introduced to provide social and economic security through a three-way agreement between participating employers, their employee-residents and the nonprofit community organization. The proposal is to develop and demonstrate a hybrid sustainable, self-organized socioeconomic arrangement that can reduce the burden on governments all with reduced carbon emission and a light footprint on the environment.
The overriding purpose of Holigent Transition is to strengthen the socioeconomic pillars of civil society and secure its survival through the turbulent times foreseeable for the balance of this century. The Los Angeles Peace and Sustainability Project is proposed to develop and demonstrate such a socioeconomic model. When demonstrated successfully, the model can be replicated in the U.S. and in communities around the world.
About Holigent
The word holigent is derived from the words holistic and emergent. These words refer to two significant aspects of evolutionary self-organization. The holistic concept has deep roots going back to the philosophers of ancient Greece. The holists, and the most prominent among them, Aristotle, believed that all things, indeed the universe, must be studied in their undivided whole to preserve their unique qualities and to yield true understanding.
Emergence is the essence of evolution by which simple parts self-organize to produce more complex systems with more versatile properties. All living things are the product of the upward mobility of evolution that is propelled through a sustained and unbroken chain of continuous improvements through spontaneous self-organized variations and natural selection. This seems to be (in broad strokes) the sustained success formula of nature.
In simpler terms, holigence is an organic arrangements of parts to create an optimal system that goes on to produce emergent higher order properties. A living body demonstrates this as the heart beats for the heart and for all the other organs, the lung breathes for the lung and for all the other organs, and so on. The fully reciprocating relationships among the organs produces life that is a higher order emergent property.
After millennia of human experimentation we have no reliable model that would assure our future, and time is running out. (See Perspectives) The holistic-emergent or holigent concept is an effort to use the natural mechanism, as closely as we can model it, in our attempt to find a formula that can help human societies survive and thrive on our endangered planet.

Defined
Holigent (see above)
The word holigent is derived from the words holistic and emergent. These words refer to two significant aspects of evolutionary self-organization. The holistic concept has deep roots going back to the philosophers of ancient Greece. The holists, and the most prominent among them, Aristotle, believed that all things, indeed the universe itself, must be studied as undivided wholes in order to preserve their unique qualities and to derive true understanding.
Emergence is the essence of evolution by which simple parts self-organize to produce more complex systems with more versatile properties. All living things are the product of the upward mobility of evolution that is propelled through a sustained and unbroken chain of continuous improvements through spontaneous, self-organized variations and natural selection. This seems to be (in broad strokes) the sustained success formula of nature.
In simpler terms, holigence is an organic arrangement of parts to create an optimal system that goes on to produce emergent higher order properties. A living body demonstrates this as the heart beats for the heart as well as for all the other organs, the lung breathes for the lung and for all the other organs, and so on. The fully reciprocating relationships among the organs produces life imbued with a higher order emergent property.
After millennia of human experimentation we have no reliable model that will assure our future and time is running out. The holistic-emergent, or Holigent concept is an effort to use natural mechanisms, as models in our attempt to find a formula that can help human societies not only survive but thrive on our endangered planet.
Transition
Transition, rather than change, is perhaps a more appropriate word to represent this plan that is not a one time event but a long process of transitioning from the high-consuming and unsustainable practices to a sustainable and peaceful socioeconomic model. The transition will be historically unique and will occupy a period of time spanning across multiple generations. The transitional period will be characterized by the thorough reengineering of nearly all our economic and social institutions including capitalism, democracy and governance. Yet this will not be a top-down instituted or revolutionary program but rather a grassroots, gradual developmental process. Wealth generation and value exchange will transition from the money-based and bottom-line focused economy to a hybrid system in which the human condition and Quality of Life Measure (QLM) will be significant factors.
Race
Climate change is merely one of multiple threats humanity is facing on our planet. There is not enough time left to halt global warming or any of the other threats through conventional means before an irreversible tipping point is reached.
However, the spirit of a global race, such as the space race that put men on the moon in less than a decade, may enable people and nations to focus their attention and through extraordinary performance achieve a stated goal.
The purpose of The Transition Race to Peace and Sustainability is to reduce carbon emissions to slow climate change and thus buy time for the socioeconomic transition as well as to prepare for and adapt to the coming global realities of the 21st century. This is a race to survive and thrive. However, we are not competing against an adversary and we are not racing against each other – we are racing together against time.
Peace
Sustainability is beyond reach on a war-torn planet and peace is unattainable in an unsustainable and conflicted world. Peace and sustainability are inseparable parts of an organic whole and must be pursued as such.
More about collective stress, conflict and hope correlations, please see Peace.
Sustainability
In our globally interconnected world, sustainability must mean nothing less than humanity’s ability to survive and thrive peacefully on our uniquely rich and hospitable planet for countless generations into the future. It is now generally recognized that business as usual will not get us there.
For that reason, Holigent.org offers a solution that does not fully depend on the technology and market “solution” or the political process in their current form but proposes the Holigent Solution – a system that combines the best of the capitalist global economy with a human resource barter-based local system in order to create a hybrid economy that will be able to generate and preserve local wealth to secure the quality of life for all its participants while remain a competitive part of the general/global economy.
The Holigent Solution rearranges the way we live, work, commute, consume, and govern ourselves in the interest of reducing our consumption-pollution to a practical minimum while improving economic security and social harmony as well as the quality of life. Residents of Transitional/Holigent communities, while leaving a minimal carbon footprint on the environment, will also commit a certain amount of time to an ongoing program of environmental restoration and protection.
