The unexamined life is not worth living.

                                  Socrates   –   5th century BCE

The unexamined life may soon be unlivable on our troubled and endangered planet.

                                Emerging Self-evidence   –   21st century

Inspired by a model of natural self-organization, the Holigent (holistic + emergent) philosophy reexamines the ways we live, work, commute, consume, manage, educate, and govern ourselves – a community at a time.

We are Nicholas Frank and Elisa Frank a father and daughter team of second and third generation social thinker/innovators working for social and economic justice and sustainability.

Nicholas was born into the Great Depression in 1937 Budapest; survived Nazism, World War II, and the uprising against the Red Army, and escaped communist Hungary following the defeat of the revolution in 1956.

He began a project in 1972 that through many phases led to the development that is now the Holigent Solution. Nicholas works for Holigent.Org full time for $1 per year. He lives in Los Angeles with wife Marsha and their grown children are Devin and Elisa.

Elisa was born in Los Angeles, earned her bachelor’s degree at UCLA and her master’s degree at UC Santa Barbara. She is a passionate human environmental geograpfer and “people person,” and also a prize-winning salsa dancer.

She has studied, worked, and traveled in Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Europe and strives to be a positively contributing citizen of our global community. Elisa works for Holigent.Org (at $1 per year) and coauthored a book with Nicholas: “The Holigent Solution.”

We understand that education is the cornerstone of civilization and the foundation of our future. We recognize that government is broke and broken, unable, in the foreseeable future, to right itself and fix the multi-dimensional problems facing society and education. For that reason we are pursuing an alternate solution that does not necessarily require an act of congress.

OUR FUTURE

EDUCATIONAL
INSTITUTIONS

The Holigent Education Solution envisions educational institutions as pioneers of a hybrid socioeconomic arrangement in which the best aspects of capitalism work in tandem with direct human resource input to generate and retain local value and wealth securing quality of life and funds for affordable education.

The core of the hybrid economy are three-way agreements between participating employers, their employees, and the nonprofit management that provide business security for employers as well as job and housing security for employees, even during economic recessions.

Employee’s flexible and variable time allocation between job and community service, depending on economic circumstances, allows arrangements that can sharpen a company’s competitive edge, thus help secure businesses and jobs.

Why Pursue This Proposal?

Generate renewable income for funding educational programs and student scholarships.

Provide quality applied education.

Engage students in pioneering a systemic solution for education and society that can create jobs and affordable housing, and introduce a model of continuous improvement in our search for true socioeconomic and environmental sustainability and quality of life for present and future generations.

Once in operation commercial and residential leases provide a perpetual source of income for Holigent Communities. A significant portion of that income would be dedicated to fund affordable education at the partner institution.

    1. From Local to Global Potential – A Better World on the Horizon

    2. A collaborative arrangement between educational institutions, Holigent.Org, community and student organizations, and funders to pursue the Holigent Solution  would be a win for affordable education, win for the United States, and win for our planet.

IMPLICATION

Coordinated with U.S. foreign policy and managed by nongovernmental organizations overseas, Holigent programs could be a model for international community networking and economic revitalization that could supplement or supplant foreign aid and promote economic security, sustainability, peace, and goodwill worldwide without strain on American taxpayers.

    1. This hybrid socioeconomic arrangement in time can be replicated from local to regional scales. When it grows to a national program it is projected to sharpen America’s competitive edge, create large numbers of jobs, move the U.S. toward energy independence, reduce the burden on government, help balance budgets, and substantially reduce our carbon footprint. The program would leave a legacy of safe, affordable, and sustainable communities across America.

Holigent.Org is proposing to collaborate with student groups and educational institutions to appeal to institutions and the wealthy members of our society to fund the Holigent Education Solution.

When funds arrive, we will:

  1. Acquire suitable land

• Hire architects to draw up plans

  1. Construct a Holigent Compact Urban Village on or off campus.

A Holigent Village is a human scale, car-free, walkable, mixed use, live/work, low carbon, nonprofit-managed, compact urban community with a hybrid local economy providing work and living spaces for small and medium companies and their employees.

PLEASE FUND THE
EDUCATION
SOLUTION

There are multiple reasons why educational institutions may want to consider building on- or off-campus Holigent Villages. Generating renewable income may be a top priority; however, engaging students in pioneering a solution for sharpening America’s competitive edge, creating jobs, reversing wealth migration, moving toward energy independence, reducing carbon emission, creating a means of economic security and quality of life, and introducing a model of continuous improvement in our search for true sustainability for present and future generations must certainly meet the goal of quality applied education!

Major educational institutions have certain built-in advantages. For the most part they have established channels of fundraising. The multi-dimensional benefits of the Holigent Solution may attract new and larger grants and donations.

The Holigent Village can be on or off campus wherever suitable land is available. The occupants can be the educational institution’s staff, employees and students if the village is on or near campus. Alternately, outside companies and their employees can be tenants regardless of the Holigent project’s proximity to campus. Portions of the income produced from residential, commercial and business leases can go to fund educational programming and materials and student scholarships.
